When it comes to accounting softwares, QuickBooks is at the top of the list in the United States. The application can be installed on both Windows and Mac and provides its users with robust features and flexibility to manage their finances. However, it can be frustrating when you sometimes encounter “QuickBooks Error 1328” during the installation of the program on Windows.

The Error 1328 has mostly been observed while upgrading to a newer version of QuickBooks On Windows 10 and 11 and sometimes it may also occur when installing a new update released from Intuit.

Most users are prompted with one of the following long line of error codes listed below:

Common causes of the 1328 Error in QuickBooks include corrupted Windows files, administrator-set user restrictions, malfunctioning Windows installer services, and or if your system is set up to only allow the installation of programs from the Microsoft Store, which prevents QuickBooks or any other third-party application from being downloaded from outside sources.

While sometimes updating your operating system usually takes care of this problem, occasionally severe damage, such as a malfunctioning Windows installer service or corrupted registry data, necessitates additional troubleshooting methods before the error can be fixed.

Reasons of QuickBooks Error 1328 during installation

  • User account control is enabled on Windows.
  • The quickbooks.exe file failed to download.
  • The built in installer services for windows are failing to start during installation.
  • User do not have Admin rights to install applications on this PC.
  • You are not logged in to the computer with an Admin Account.
  • QuickBooks or your computer is running too slow.

How to fix Error 1328 during QuickBooks installation?

Having learnt about the two distinct situations in which error 1328 can occur, you should now follow the troubleshooting actions listed below depending on your current situation. If you have an update error, move on to Solution 2 and follow the troubleshooting instructions there.

Continue with “Solution 1” if you get the error when installing QuickBooks desktop.

Solution 1: Fix QuickBooks Error 1328 during installation

Step 1: Reboot your System

This is the first and most important troubleshooting step. QuickBooks may not install on your computer for a variety of reasons, including a temporary dll file not loading. Before moving on to more advanced troubleshooting steps, restart your computer to restore it to a clean state.

If you are still unable to install QuickBooks after rebooting, follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Step 2: Change app installer setting in windows

Traditional desktop applications and apps purchased from the Microsoft Store can both be installed on computers running Windows 10/11. You will only be able to install apps from the Store if you have certain settings enabled, so you should check those settings first.

To apply the necessary settings:

  • Open the windows “start menu”.
  • Select “Settings” from the left pane.
  • “Select Apps” from the list of setting options.

Now at the top you will see an option that says ‘Choose Where To Get Apps’ If the Microsoft store only option was selected then you won’t be able to install applications from anywhere else, This will prevent you from installing QuickBooks since it has not been downloaded from the Microsoft store.

Next, Change this to Anywhere or If you want choose (Anywhere but let me know if there is a compatible app in the Microsoft store) Now windows won’t prevent you from installing QuickBooks Desktop anymore.

Step 3: Run the installer as an Administrator

“User Account Control” (UAC) in Windows ensures that your account only uses its administrative capabilities when necessary. Because most software requires administrative privileges to install, you’ll frequently encounter a UAC prompt when attempting to install QuickBooks.

If you are only installing QuickBooks for your current account, you may not need administrator privileges. However, if the QB software needs to be accessed by multiple users on a network at the same time, Admin privileges are required to complete the installation process.

So make sure that UAC is not turned off, otherwise prompts to grant admin permissions may not appear.

Sometimes approving a UAC prompt will occasionally fail resulting into ‘QuickBooks error 1328’ stating that the installation is unable to write to a specific folder, or it may refuse to execute at all. In these cases, you should run the quickbooks.exe file installer as an administrator.

Close all QuickBooks installation popups, then ‘right-click on the QB installer file’ and ‘select Run as administrator.’ After obtaining administrative privileges, re-open the quickbooks.exe file to complete the installation.

In case you do not have Administrative rights enabled on your account check with someone who does or find out how to get admin rights on your computer for further help.

Step 4: Run QuickBooks install diagnostic tool

You may encounter Error 1328 or 1712 while installing or upgrading to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop due to corrupted or damaged files on the system. To resolve this, you may need to repair or replace those files.

Instead of going through every single file to find out which ones are causing problems, the QuickBooks diagnostic tool will find and repair or replace those files for you in a matter of minutes.

To begin, Download QuickBooks Tools Hub. Once installed, proceed with the steps below.

  • Open the “Tools hub application”.
  • Select “Installation issues”.
  • Now Choose “QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool” and let the tool scan ( It may take anywhere between 15 to 20 mins) to complete the scan.
  • Once complete “restart your computer” and try reinstalling QuickBooks again.

If the issue persists then move on to the next step to try installing QB in Safe Mode.

Step 5: Install QuickBooks in Safe mode

Safe mode is a startup option that can assist you in troubleshooting issues with your computer. The service restarts windows with the minimum files and drivers installed on the system which sometimes makes it easier to intsall a third-party application such as QB in Windows.

Here’s how:

  • Press the Start key > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  • When your computer restarts, you will see the Choose an option screen., select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. You might be prompted to enter your Bit Locker recovery key.

Once your PC boots up in safe mode, Open the quickbooks.exe file to begin installing QuickBooks.

Once your installation is successful and you have not encountered any further error 1328 then simply restart your computer to exit safe mode.

Quick Tip: If you are having trouble exiting out of safe mode after installing QB then follow the methods below:

  • Press the Windows logo key + R at the same time.
  • In the Open box, type msconfig and then press OK.
  • Choose the Boot tab.
  • Clear the Safe boot checkbox under Boot options.

Solution 2: Fix Error 1328 in QuickBooks during update

If you already have an older version of QuickBooks installed on your computer and are trying to update or upgrade to a newer edition but failing to do so because of the error 1328 then it is recommended to perform one of the following steps mentioned below:

Step 1: First Uninstall the older versions of QB:

  • On Windows 10 & 11 go to Start > Click on Settings > Choose Apps.
  • Next you will see a Search bar under apps and features.
  • Type QuickBooks > Click on the app > Select Uninstall.

Important: If you have multiple versions of QuickBooks installed on the system, make sure to only select the one for which you want to install a newer version.

Step 2: Reinstall QuickBooks:

  • Download your desired QuickBooks Version.
  • Store the quickbooks.exe file at a location easy to find.
  • Open the file once it is downloaded, then, follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation process.
  • Next fill out the “License number” and “Product ID” fields.
  • After that Choose an installation method.
  • Choose ‘Express install’ if you are going to use QuickBooks from only one computer as a single user.
  • Choose ‘Custom and Network install ’ if you are installing the app on a server and are going to use QuickBooks multi-user hosting feature to access the application from multiple computers.
  • Choose a location to store the installation files. It is often the Programs Folder. “Click Next”.
  • Wait for the installation to complete and then “open QuickBooks”.

Step 3: Run program troubleshooter

A number of built-in troubleshooting tools in Windows 10 and 11 aim to detect and resolve common issues. They don’t always work, but they’re worth a try if Windows won’t let you install an application for whatever reason.

  • In Windows 10 Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and select Additional troubleshooters to get to the troubleshooter for installing QuickBooks. Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter from this location to see if it resolves QuickBooks Error 1328 during installation.
  • In Windows 11 these utilities can be found under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
